Selected Studies Requirements

To remain in good standing for Selected Studies, students must:

Signing up for an Honors/A-Section Course

Once accepted into the Honors Program, students are given departmental overrides for Honors/A-section courses. Please remember that the overrides do not register students for the course; to ensure a seat please register for the courses on the indicated registration date and time found on myUH.

If an override for a specific Honors/A-section was not granted prior to registration, please contact the Honors Program office.

Deciding Not to Take an Honors or A-Section Course for a Semester

For those who are not able to take an Honors/A-section course for a semester:

Option 1: Take two Honors/A-section courses in the following semester.

Option 2: Take an Honors course during the summer.

Option 3: Fulfill the requirements of the Credit Relief Program.

Regardless of the option you choose, please email Siobhán Ní Dhonacha (dhonacha@hawaii.edu) regarding this decision.  Students who do not inform us will be put on programmatic probation for not taking an Honors/A-section course for the semester.

Engagement

Although we no longer require students to submit a CV showcasing their engagement activities to us at the end of the semester, we still strongly recommend participating in extracurricular activities!  Below are a few steps to help students get engaged:

  1. Students should think about what they want to do when they graduate with their bachelor’s degree. Is it going to graduate or medical school? Is it to get a job right away?
  2. Next, students should think about what potential schools or future employers would want to see on their applications. Think of organizations, programs, competitions, internships, volunteer work, and other activities to include.
  3. Knowing the steps they should take, students should get involved as soon as possible.
  4. Lastly, students should list all activities on their curriculum vita/resume so they can make themselves better candidates for that dream school or job!

Sophomore Honors Award

To earn the Sophomore Honors Award, students need to fulfill the appropriate requirements as listed below:

  • Sophomore Honors
    • 6 credits of A-section courses
    • 6 credits of Honors courses
    • GPA of 3.25, in both Honors courses and overall
  • Sophomore High Honors
    • 6 credits of A-section courses
    • 6 credits of Honors courses
    • Minimum GPA of 3.5, in both Honors courses and overall
  • Sophomore Highest Honors

    • 6 credits of Honors courses
    • Minimum GPA of 3.75, in both Honors courses and overall

This is a distinction that earns a certificate of achievement and a special notation on the transcript.

Programmatic Probation

Students who do not meet the Honors Program minimum cumulative GPA requirement of 3.2 or who do not take an Honors or A-section course without letting us know will be placed on programmatic probation for the upcoming semester.

Being on programmatic probation with the Honors Program will NOT be recorded on your official academic record nor will it affect your UHM academic standing.

Students who do not earn a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher by the end of the upcoming semester will be dismissed from the Selected Studies Program.  If programmatic probation was received for not taking an Honors or A-section course and the student failed to complete the outstanding course, the students will be dismissed.

For further clarification, a student with cumulative GPA lower than 3.0 for the fall semester will be placed on programmatic probation for the spring semester. If the student does not earn a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at the end of the spring semester, the student will be dismissed from the Selected Studies Program.
