1.  What is the average GPA of students accepted into your program?

The average GPA of accepted students between the years of 2006-2012 was 3.66.

2.  What are typical GRE General Test scores for students accepted into your program? Is there a cutoff for GRE scores?

We do not have a cutoff for GRE scores and use them along with many other criteria to evaluate an applicant.

3. Is there financial support available for Tropical Medicine graduate students?

Most graduate students accepted into the program are supported by graduate assistantships. The majority of these are research assistantship positions although a few teaching assistantships are available through other university departments. The department provides first-year support for all PhD students, with support for subsequent years provided by the student’s mentor. In addition, all full-time graduate assistants (MS and PhD) receive a complete tuition waiver from the university.

5.  Should I contact specific department faculty about training opportunities in their labs before I am admitted into the program?

Potential applicants are encouraged to contact faculty in research areas of interest during the application process. A description of faculty research areas is provided in the Faculty section of this website.

6.  What types of letters of recommendation are most helpful when applying?

Of the two required letters of recommendation, one should be from an instructor or academic adviser who is familiar with the student’s academic achievements and potential. The second letter should preferably come from a research supervisor, if the student has had research experience, or from an employer or supervisor of full-time or part-time employment.

7.What kind of information should I provide in the Statement of Objectives?

In addition to providing a narrative of your personal, academic and research background, this statement should also explain your goals (short-term and long-term) in obtaining a graduate degree in Tropical Medicine and why you decided to apply to this specific graduate program. If there are any irregularities in your application (a low course grade or standardized test score, interruptions in your education, an unusually long time to obtain a degree, etc.), you should take this opportunity to provide a succinct explanation of the circumstances and steps taken to correct any problem.
