Presentation by Ray Delio, Director and Program Manager at HECO, an advisor on clean energy, program management, and technical services.
Ray “sees real possibilities for large amounts of onsite renewable generation supported by an aggressive energy efficiency program under a Microgrid approach (“being able to island”) where the vast majority of UHM can operate when the grid is unavailable ( capable of operating when the grid is “off” aka an outage). Many universities around the world are doing this today in part to protect their most valuable research.
By bringing together UHM owned Microgrid technology with a comprehensive conservation plan and a clear position on renewable generation, I believe UHM has a real commercial opportunity to achieve levelized cost of energy (LCOE) significantly below market, and depending on how the investment is acquired, below 15¢/kWh. The solution is not trivial, and will present obstacles that need to be managed, but it is my opinion that this goal is commercially available and symbiotic with the local electrical grid.”
