General Freshman Registration
What are the ways to register for classes?
You can register in three ways; through ACE Learning Community, Pre-Registration through STAR, and through the regular registration. Ace Learning Community and Pre-registration through STAR let you register for classes early (starting May 15-July 15 at 5:00 pm HST), while the standard registration begins on August 12-13.
What are the differences between the three registration systems?

Why are there so many different options for freshman registration?
In an attempt to accommodate different learning styles, the University of Hawaii at Manoa has provided three different options for incoming freshman registration.
As a freshman, do I have to take placement exams?
Whether or not you take placement exams depends on the major you select and the career path you are pursuing (e.g. pre-Medicine). The chemistry exam is specifically for students who want/need to take CHEM 161 or 171. The math exam is specifically for students who want or need to take MATH 140, 203, 215, 241 or 251A or PHYS 151/L. The foreign language exam is for students who want/need to take a foreign language. You are required to take the foreign language placement exam if you have prior experience in the language whether it be formal (studied it in high school) or informal (grew up in a household that speaks the language). If you have no prior experience in the language, you may enroll in it without taking the placement exam. Please check the program sheet for your major or consult an advisor to determine whether or not your major requires these courses. In addition, please keep in mind that if you decide to register through ACE Learning Community or Pre-Registration, you may have to take a placement exam depending on the cluster or the course you choose.
Can I register for ACE Learning Communities and then use the Pre-Registration option to register early for my additional classes?
You can choose either the Pre-Registration system or participate in the ACE Learning Communities, but not both.
After I complete Registration do I have to do anything else before classes start?
This is dependent on a student’s unique situation. For example, one may need to get health clearances or placement exams.
ACE Learning Communities
How do I register for the Learning Community classes?
Log in with your UH username and password to the ACE Learning Community registration page by going to https://www.star.hawaii.edu:10012/studentinterface/loginLearnCom.jsp. You can then choose your desired cluster. Simply click on the cluster of your choice, select additional course choices should there be any, click Accept the terms located at the bottom of the page, and click on the Submit button. Once you have been accepted to the cluster, we will register you for those classes, and seats in these classes would be reserved. You should also receive a confirmation email telling you that you are guaranteed admittance into the classes. The exception, however, would be if you are signed up for a class that requires a placement test; students will not be officially admitted into Learning Communities with “Placement required” classes until they have received satisfactory placement, which they would have to complete by July 30th.
If I join an ACE Learning Community, when do I register?
You can begin registering on May 15th through July 15th at 5:00 pm (HST).
Is there a waitlist for the Learning Communities?
No. There are no waitlists for Learning Communities.
Can I change or choose the day and time of the classes or drop a class in my ACE Learning Community cluster?
No, you cannot modify your schedule within your cluster, and seats have been reserved for Learning Community use in only the sections we have indicated.
What happens if I don’t place into the class that requires a placement test in my cluster?
If students have not received approval for a course that requires placement (e.g. CHEM 161, MATH 140, MATH 241) in their requested ACE cluster by July 30th, participation in the ACE Learning Community program will be automatically forfeited.
Is ACE Learning Community open to first-year transfer students?
ACE is open to all incoming first-time freshmen only.
If I choose STAR Pre-Registration, when do I register?
You can begin registering starting May 15th and through July 15th at 5:00 pm (HST). You can select your desired courses based on your major by going to https://www.star.hawaii.edu:10012/studentinterface/loginPreReg.jsp and logging in with your UH username and password. Upon submitting your courses, you will receive a pre-registration confirmation. Please note, however, that your STAR Pre-Registration confirmation does not constitute your final schedule. Your final schedule will be created by August 8th based on your preferences, individual placement test results (if required by a course) and other factors. Once your registration time arrives (which begins on August 12-13), you will have a chance to finalize your schedule by adding or dropping courses obtained through Pre-Registration on MyUH Portal (Drop by August 31st, add by September 2nd 4PM).
If I haven’t decided my major yet, can I still use Pre-Registration?
Yes! Signing up for Pre-Registration through STAR or the ACE clusters is an excellent way to help you to test out the courses needed for a potential major. You can also use Pre-Registration without having to choose a potential major (in this case, the course choices would list the classes that would fulfill the General Education Requirement).
How do I know if the classes offered through the Pre-Registration option apply towards my major?
Classes offered through Pre-Registration or ACE have either been selected or constructed with an eye to what the major recommends you take and are designed to help you to fulfill requirements you would need for that major and make academic progress towards graduation. Please keep in mind that requirements can vary from major to major. Therefore, it is important to consult with your academic advisor if you consider a different major.
Can I add/drop during the Pre-Registration period (Can I modify my preferences)?
Once you have submitted your preferences, you will not be able to make any changes. However, what you can do is to modify your schedule once the standard registration begins, which starts on August 12-13.
If I Pre-register, will this be my final registration?
Generally, yes. However, please keep in mind that Pre-Registration sometimes includes courses that require instructor approval or placement exams. This being the case, these would need to be resolved prior to August 1st in order to obtain the courses on your final schedule. In addition, you can modify your schedule once the standard registration begins, which starts on August 12-13.
Academic Advising and Payment
Do I have to meet with an adviser before I can register?
Some majors require their students to meet with an academic advisor prior to registering through Pre-Registration, so please check for pop ups that may alert you that this is the case. For a majority of majors, if you will be joining an ACE Learning Community or registering through Pre Registration, meeting with an advisor is not required, because courses in these options have already been reviewed. If you decide not to participate in these options and plan to do standard registration, we recommend you to see an advisor or review the program sheet for your intended major in order to ensure you are on the right track.
I’ve heard about mandatory advising. What is it and how will it affect me?
You do not have mandatory advising as an incoming student. However, once you are a continuing (freshman) student, you will have mandatory advising every Fall and Spring semester for your first two years. Around the fourth week of school, you will receive an email from your school or college with further information on how to fulfill your mandatory advising requirement. UH email is considered an official source of communication; you are advised to check your UH email regularly so that you will not miss important announcements from your college or major.
Do I have to complete all the requirements (General Education, Core, Major, Pre-Major) by a certain time during my first year?
Generally, no. However, an incoming freshman must complete their Foundations Written Communications “FW” requirement in their Freshmen year. This would be an English class, and students can fulfill this requirement by taking ENG 100, ENG 100A, ESL 100, or place out of it by earning 4 or above on AP English, or by submitting a collection of their writing for approval. Students are also encouraged to take their remaining foundations courses (FS and two FGs) during their first year.
If I have not already done so, when do I have to declare my major?
It is in your best interest to declare your major early to ensure timely graduation. It is possible to declare certain majors at any time, while some have admission requirements that must first be met. For example, certain majors require you to be of junior standing, have pre-requisite grades or courses you need to complete in order to declare. We strongly recommend that you declare your major as soon as possible and at the latest, by the end of your junior year.
I declared a major on my application, but no longer wish to pursue this major. Can I change my major?
If you are eligible to declare the major you wish to pursue, visit the advisor for the College/School for your intended major to fill out an application /Change of Major form. If you need to complete pre-requisites in order to declare your major, visit the Manoa Advising Center to declare a pre-major (e.g., Pre-Medicine, Pre-Law, Pre-Business, etc.).
When is the tuition payment due for freshmen?
Fall 2015 tuition and fees payment deadline for incoming students is September 2nd at 4:00PM (HST). If full payment is not received or you have not signed up for the payment plan in MyUH by the deadline, the University may place a financial hold on your student account until this obligation is paid. When is the final payment due for Preregistration and ACE Learning Communities? And can we participate in the payment plan option?
The final payment for Preregistration and ACE Learning Communities is exactly the same as it is for all the freshmen. Payment is due September 2nd at 4:00PM (HST). Click here for a detailed description of how to check your payment deadlines and make payments.
If I have taken one semester at another college or university, and am transferring to UH as a freshman, am I still qualified to participate in either ACE or Pre-Registration?
Unfortunately, no. The Pre-Registration and ACE Learning Communities are structured to be for first time incoming freshmen only.
