Christopher Newfield

Christopher Newfield is Professor Emeritus at UC Santa Barbara and Past President of the Modern Language Association. He is the author of several books on US universities as social and political institutions, including: Metrics That Matter: Counting What’s Really Important to College Students (2023); Ivy and Industry: Business and the Making of the American University, 1880-1980 (2003); and The Great Mistake: How We Wrecked Public Universities and How We Can Fix Them (2016). In 2017, he served as Dai Ho Chun Chair at UH Mānoa.
