Kanesa Duncan Seraphin
Principal Investigator
The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa's Curriculum Research & Development Group (CRDG) and the University of Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program are conducting a research study as part of their Teaching Science as Inquiry (TSI) project. The research is focused on content, appropriateness, accessibility, format, use patterns, and community-building components of the Exploring Our Fluid Earth curriculum and the associated Online Learning Community.
Project Description - Activities: Participation in the research project will consist of providing information about your education, teaching, online use, and interests. This is required in order to become a registered user of the Online Learning Community, which will allow you to view student content, teacher content, and images as well as upload, download, and share materials with other registered participants. You may also be asked to periodically complete optional surveys on the nature of science, teaching experiences, and online curriculum materials.
Benefits and Risks: Participating in this research project will allow you to interact with other members of the Exploring Our Fluid Earth community. In addition, results of this project will help the future development of the Exploring Our Fluid Earth curriculum and associated Online Learning Community.
We believe there is little or no risk to participating in this research project.
Compensation: There is no compensation for time spent participating in this research project.
Confidentiality and Privacy: During and after this research project, steps will be taken to protect your privacy and any information that you wish to keep confidential. For example, when reporting the results of this research project your name or any other personally identifying information will not be used. Instead a pseudonym (fake name) will be used for your name.
Research data will be confidential to the extent allowed by law. Agencies with research oversight, such as the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Committee on Human Studies, have the authority to review research data. All research records with identifying personal information will be stored in a secure manner; names will be replaced with code numbers before analysis; only authorized personnel will have access to the data; quantitative results will be reported in aggregate; and all data will be reported anonymously.
Voluntary Participation: Participation in this research project is completely voluntary. You are free to participate or not participate. You are free to withdraw from participation at any time. To withdraw from the project, you may 1) unregister yourself from the online learning community or 2) email the program staff asking to withdraw (at which point program staff will unregister you from the Online Learning Community).
