Name: Chad Noble-Tabiolo

Year graduated with PH degree? 2014 (Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Health)

Professional Title & Brief Job Description (or what are you doing now?):
Monitoring & Evaluation and Communication Officer, Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (CYECE), Global Health Corps Fellow in Malawi 2014-2015. I work in monitoring and evaluation, where I track the organization’s projects and identify any gaps, shortfalls or recommendations for meeting targets. I try to ensure that we are capturing and measuring impact at all levels of project implementation.  Additionally, I do a little communications and advocacy - designing fliers, brochures, banners, shirts, slogans, reports, etc- a newly built department at CYECE.

What does a typical “day at work” look like for you?
In Malawi, I wake up a bit early, around 5:45am and go for a nice 5K run.  I’ll bike to work and once I get there, I’ll check emails and respond accordingly.  Next, I’ll review my weekly work plan to see where I am at on my responsibilities.  I will typically meet with the program coordinators or newly hired communications officer for shared tasks.  If my supervisor requests for me to work on something - ad hoc - then i’ll get to that.  Otherwise,I am either in the office or in the field collecting or analyzing data - quantitatively or qualitatively; or working on some kind of cool media design.

How did your public health degree prepare you for your work? Or how do you think it will in the future?
My public health training gave me the foundation in the knowledge and tools to be an effective public health professional; however, you will acquire more knowledge, skills and tools as you progress in your careers.  Keep learning and continue to challenge yourself with new material and unchartered territories.

Any advice for future public health students, undergraduate or graduate?
My advice is to never stop learning.  Public health, especially global health, is constantly evolving and you need to stay current with the newest trends - take a free online course with EdX, Acumen+ and NovoEd.
