Alumni Profile: Brandyn Dunn, MPH '11

Name: Brandyn Dunn

Year graduated with PH degree? 2011 (epidemiology)

Professional Title & Brief Job Description (or what are you doing now)?
Second year medical student - studying to become a specialist in pediatrics.

What does a typical "day at work" look like for you?
Since I am still in school, a typical day of work is rather unpredictable. My day is filled with lots of studying, lectures, lab time, and clinical skills workshops. I also enjoy getting the opportunity to volunteer out in the community every once in a while.

How did your public health degree prepare you for your work? Or how do you think it will in the future?
My public health degree completely changed my perspective on my life as well as how I approach the medical field. My degree has allowed me to keep the community perspective in mind as well as be able to critically think through the broader issues in the health care field. I feel so lucky to have an MPH and enjoy helping to educate my fellow classmates about the many things I learned while studying for my degree. I hope that in the future I am able to combine my public health foundation with my clinical knowledge to explore work opportunities in health education and promotion administrative roles.

Any advice for future public health students, undergraduate or graduate?
My one piece of advance for future PH students is to remember that public health is probably one of the most versatile professions out there and the knowledge acquired during this degree will be helpful in any job or field you end up going into.
