UH Mānoa kicks off new semester

Students are reminded to be security-conscious

An estimated 20,000 students start classes this week at the Mānoa campus of the University of Hawai’i.  We are a safe campus but we’re aware of the need to be safer.

Steps have been taken to increase security following a burglary and assault on a student in the Hale Aloha Mokihana dormitory early Sunday.  Among them:

  • Housing officials are moving as quickly as possible to institute 24/7 lobby check-ins at the Hale Aloha dorms.  This will require all residents to show their identification and sign into a registry.  Key access is already required to enter the dorm lobby and elevators.
  • Security patrols have been increased around the dormitories and throughout interior hallways.
  • Students have met with their resident assistants and been reminded to take responsibility for their safety as well, by locking their doors and not allowing anyone into the dorms without proper identification.
  • Other campus security measures offered are:

ESCORT SERVICE
Campus Security provides transportation or a walking escort from dusk to dawn for anyone walking alone on campus at night. By calling 956-8211, an escort can be summoned to your location. The escort will either transport you in a Campus Security vehicle or accompany you on foot to any University parking lot or facility.

EMERGENCY CALL BOXES
There are 68 emergency call boxes located throughout the campus which connect the caller directly with the Campus Security dispatcher. These emergency call boxes are activated by picking up the handset. Campus Security can immediately identify the location of the caller even if the caller is unable to verbally communicate with the dispatcher.

Sunday’s incident is under active investigation by the Honolulu Police Department and Campus Security.  Students and others are asked to assist by notifying police or security of any suspicious persons who are spotted on campus.
