Hernandez comes to Mānoa from his position as Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at the University of California, Santa Cruz. During his tenure there, Hernandez led the process by which the Santa Cruz campus developed a strategic plan for student services, and then implemented the plan during a period of significant student enrollment increases.
Hernandez previously served as Dean of Student Life and then as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at UC Berkeley. He also held a number of positions elsewhere in secondary and post-secondary school programs in California. While at UC Santa Cruz, he initiated and developed the University of California College Prep (UCCP) program and served as its Executive Director. UCCP provides online college preparatory courses annually to thousands of students throughout California and beyond who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate.
A native of Texas, he received his Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in education from Stanford University, a bachelor.s degree in American studies from UC Berkeley, and an A.A. degree from Sierra Junior College in California. He comes to Hawai.i with his wife Veronica Hinojosa and their two children, Kiko, age 14, and Adriana, age 13.
