Biological Safety Training Program

The UH Biosafety Compliance Program offers both in classroom and online courses on Biosafety, Transportation of Biological and Infectious Substances, Bloodborne Pathogens, Select Agent regulations, Biosafety Cabinet Use to the researchers, students and staff of the University of Hawaiʻi. Access to the online training is via the UH Laulima Portal. A list of course offerings and information is provided below.

  General Biological Safety

UH researchers, laboratory staff and students working with biological commodities are required to complete an initial in-classroom training, as well as an annual online refresher. To schedule a classroom training, contact us through the online Contact Form.

Online Training

The Biological Safety Training course is available online through Laulima.

  1. To register for the course, visit: https://laulima.hawaii.edu/autoenroll/?uh_biosafetyopens in a new window
  2. Log in with your UH username and password.Staff, students or guests at the University who do not have a hawaii.edu username can obtain a username and password here. To gain temporary guest access to the training program without a hawaii.edu username use the online Contact Form. Please provide the PI's name in your message.
  3. The course will be added to your list of courses (the tabs at the top of your Laulima homepage). If not, try refreshing your window.
  4. Click on the "General Biosafety Training" course and review the modules.
  5. Click on "Take the Quiz" in the left hand navigational panel, and then click "General Biosafety Quiz" to begin the quiz.
  6. You will be notified via email of successful completion of the training.

  Bloodborne Pathogen Standards and Sharps Hazard Prevention
                      (Initial and Annual)
This is a mandatory course designed for all University of Hawaiʻi research staff who may come into contact with human fluids and other biological materials including cell lines.

This training will cover Exposure Control and Determination; Methods of Compliance; Housekeeping; HIV, HBV and HCV; Hepatitis B Vaccination and Post-Exposure Evaluation and Follow- Up; Communication of Hazards to Employees, Recordkeeping, Risk Assessments. Initial training must be in classroom interactive setting.

Bloodborne pathogens training is required when there is an occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials OSHA 1910.1030(a).

Training is required if you work with or handle:

  • human blood products
  • human body fluids (blood, semen, synovial fluid, amniotic fluid, CSF, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, pericardial fluid)
  • unfixed human tissue
  • organs
  • primary cell lines
  • human organs or tissues
  • tissues or body fluids
  • Hepatitis B virus or other bloodborne pathogens
  • Enter or work in areas where other individuals work with any of the above materials where risk of exposure may occur.

Initial Training

Provided in classroom interactive setting as required by OSHA (1910.1030(g)(2).

Bloodborne Pathogens Refresher/Evaluation Training

The Bloodborne Pathogens Refresher/Evaluation Training course is available online through Laulima for laboratory personnel.

  2. Log in with your UH username and password. Note: Training is for laboratory personnel only.   Biological Substances Transport Awareness
This is a mandatory course designed for all University of Hawaiʻi staff who will transport biological materials (not including Category A infectious substances or Select Agents or Toxins). This course is a general awareness training on packaging, labeling, preparation of shipping documents for transport of biological substances to and from the State of Hawaiʻi.

The Transport Awareness Training course is available online through Laulima.

Training is also available in classroom style lessons for groups of 5 or more attendees. To schedule a classroom training, contact us through the online Contact Form.

  Transportation of Infectious Substances, Category A
This is a mandatory course designed for any University of Hawaiʻi staff who intend to transport Category A infectious substances including select agents and toxins.

Training will cover Classification, Packaging, Marking, Labeling and Documentation requirements for proper shipping of biological commodities, according to IATA, DOT, DOC, CDC, USDA- APHIS, and CFR regulations. Training is required for anyone who transports, ships, or receives infectious and biological substances. Recertification is required every two years.

  Select Agent and Toxins
Annual training on current select agent regulations, biosafety principles and practices, biosecurity, bio-containment and any other applicable Biosafety Compliance Program trainings is required for all researchers and staff enrolled in the University of Hawaiʻi Select Agent Program. All applicable training must be completed prior to being granted access to Select agents and/or toxins. Training is provided through laulima and in classroom.

Note: Access to the UH Select Agent Program site is restricted to researchers and staff preparing for enrollment and who are currently enrolled in the UH Select Agent Program. Contact Us for access and additional information.
