Nominations for Future Speakers
The committee for the Distinguished Lecture Series is always interested in receiving nominations, and we will accept them at anytime. Anyone may make a nomination (or simply suggest a name for consideration).
The committee looks especially closely at nominations from organizations, either at the University of Hawaiʻi or elsewhere, that offer to cosponsor a speaker. In general, we are interested in speakers who are both excellent in their fields and who are proficient in putting their views before the public in a relevant and interesting way. We try to select a balanced slate of speakers from among the various disciplines.
A formal call for nominations goes out by email to the University community at the start of each academic year, usually in September. The committee for the Series collects the nominations and meets, usually in November, to choose up to four speakers to invite for the following academic year. The committee puts out an announcement to the University community about the next year's schedule as soon as possible thereafter, both by email and on this web site.
If you and/or your organization would like to make a nomination, please submit a letter and, if possible, supporting material. In the letter, briefly describe the accomplishments of the speaker and explain why you believe that he or she should be invited. Supporting material might be: a vita, sample publications, a relevant book, and so on. Nominations can be directed to:
