CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Asia Pacific Dance Festival Conference

Ulana—To Weave or Knit
August 12-14, 2022
University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and East-West Center

The Asia Pacific Dance Festival (APDF) Conference is held in conjunction with one of the premiere dance festivals in Hawaiʻi. The APDF showcases the uniqueness and quality of dance, dancers, and choreographers from Asia and the Pacific with classes, performances, workshops, outreach to local communities in Hawaiʻi, and ceremonial activities.

The APDF Conference provides opportunities for students, faculty, independent scholars, and individuals involved in dance in diverse ways to share research about dance-related topics with an international audience. The 2022 APDF Conference will include both in-person and virtual presentations.

Conference Theme

Ulana
(ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi—Hawaiian Language)
to weave, to knit together, to braid

In Ike Ulana Lau Hala: The Vitality and Vibrancy of Lau Hala Weaving Traditions in Hawaii, Marques Hanalei Marzan, Hawaiian fiber artist and member of the Bishop Museum’s Cultural Resources Division, tells us:

Ulana binds us to each other, continually weaving our families together into a great mat.  This dynamic network grows with every new relationship, beginning with our foundational strands that sparked the flame of creativity, the source of our traditions and values, which continue to pass on to overlapping layers.  Though breaks occur over time, which extinguish individual flames, the light continues to endure. Remembering that our choices determine our mat’s growth and stability is vital. We all must choose…

Kuleana, one’s right, privilege, concern, and responsibility, is the basis of understanding ulana.

Ulana, the creative act of weaving, concerns not only a product, whether a tangible object such as a woven mat or the intricacies of a performance piece, but the process of realizing interconnections and layerings of knowledge, values, relationships, and place.

We welcome presentations by scholars, dancers, performing artists, choreographers, performance-based activists, critics, writers, and arts administrators and organizers that reflect the APDF’s focus on dance cultures of the Asia Pacific region and that honor and value knowledge of what has come before, that which resonates in the present, and possibilities of what may come.

Presentations should constitute original, new research not previously presented or published. In addressing the conference theme presenters may consider such questions as:

  • How are movement, sound, attire, and beliefs woven together to create what is considered “dance”?
  • What and how is knowledge originating in the past woven into present movement and performance expressions such as dance? What kinds of negotiations are involved in this process?
  • Have events of the past several years such as COVID-19 and/or political movements mobilized dance and dancers to form new kinds of communities? If so, in what ways?
  • In what ways can we interrogate ideas of appropriation and permissibility when considering the use of indigenous art forms? How can indigenous people be empowered and their rights and ancestral knowledge protected in such processes?
  • How can indigenous and/or decolonizing methodologies be integrated in dance research that attempts cross-cultural understanding?

Priority will be given to proposals that address the conference theme of Ulana. Proposals for presentations of new original research that does not address the theme may be accepted, depending upon time availability.

Formats

The conference will be hybrid in nature, with a limited number of virtual presentations available.

The following are formats for presentations:

  • individual papers—20 minutes for presentation (usually 8 to 9 type-written pages, double-spaced, using 12-point font); additional 10 minutes for Q&A
  • organized panels—90-minutes total time (a pre-composed grouping of usually 3 individual papers that may also include a discussant designated by the panel, if so desired); if a discussant is included, presentation and discussant times should be adjusted to allow at least 15 minutes for Q&A involving attendees
  • roundtables—75 minutes for presentation/comments and discussion among the panelists; additional 15 minutes for Q&A involving attendees
  • performances (indoors or outdoors)—20 minutes total time (presentation—including any introductory comments and performance of a newly created dance or dance excerpt for which the choreographer wishes to obtain comments/feedback. The performance should be completely run by the choreographer or choreographer’s representative). The 20 minutes may include 10 minutes for Q&A/feedback from attendees. While performances may be based on or incorporate long-established repertoire, this format is not intended to provide a platform for a mini-concert of such repertoire. No technical support will be available beyond overhead lighting and sound play back
  • workshops—45 minutes, including the workshop itself and Q&A from attendees, if so desired (informal, interactive, hands-on session on one topic, completely run by the workshop organizer/presenter)
  • lightning papers*—10 minutes for presentation on current research or project being developed; additional 5 minutes for Q&A
  • other creative formats may be considered as long as they follow the basic guidelines articulated above

*Lightning papers are encouraged for presenters whose work is still in developmental stages.

For presentations other than performances and movement workshops the following will be available:  laptop computers, projectors, screens, speakers

Individuals or groups presenting virtually will be required to submit a pre-recorded video at least two weeks prior to the conference start date and in the format designated upon acceptance of proposal. Individuals or groups presenting virtually or their designated representative will need to be present virtually for Q&A following the scheduled showing of their presentation.
