How to Get Tutored

Math and Science   

Math and Science uses the “STAR Balance Kiosk” as a drop-in tutoring space. Once you join the queue, you will be emailed a Zoom link once a tutor is available.

  • Log in with your UH account 
  • Join the Math and Science queue 
  • Check your UH email
  • Fill out the pre-appointment form 
  • Get tutored once a tutor is available!

Writing   

Writing uses the “STAR Balance Kiosk” to schedule and act as an online tutoring space. Once scheduled, you will receive a confirmation email. 
  • Log in with your UH account 
  • Find OLA Writing in “Tutoring and Tech” 
  • “Click” on an open space
  • Fill out the pre-appointment form
  • Get tutored at your designated time!

  • Biology (Up to BIOL 172)

  • Physics (Up to PHYS 272)

Tutors can help with various homework types, such as practice problems, project reports, and generating project ideas. Also, tutors can aid in understanding writing prompts, writing a thesis, developing an outline, organization, revision, and more!

Presentations

Tutors can help develop slides, topics, and details for your upcoming presentation. Also, tutors can help you create scripts and notecards to accompany your presentation. 

Reading comprehension

Tutors can help you understand word problems and project instructions.

Vocabulary building

Tutors can help students define vocabulary words essential to understanding writing and the writing process.

Test and Quiz Review

Tutors can help you review previous tests or quizzes to help you understand the materials better. 

Summary and analysis

Students can get assistance in understanding the differences between summary and analysis and how to develop and incorporate each in their writing.

Research

Good writing depends on good research, and tutors can assist in finding, understanding, and incorporating resources into your writing effectively.

Citations

Depending on the assignment’s requirements, tutors can assist with the proper use of MLA and APA citations and the development of bibliographies and works cited pages.

How we support teachers

  • Differentiated instruction: tutors can work with a student or group of students on certain skills or topics
  • Content review: students can ask for assistance with class information they don’t understand or for which they need clarification
  • Independent practice: tutors can go over classwork or unfinished classwork with students
