September 18 is “Shimakutuba nu Hi” in Okinawa. It is an initiative by the Okinawa Prefectural Government to encourage people to use the Okinawan language in an effort to revitalize/preserve the language. To commemorate this day, the COS Lecture Series kicks off with a talk by UH Emerita Professor Kyoko Hijirida and Grant “Sandaa” Murata Sensei on Okinawan language. Both have taught Okinawan language classes. They will be doing storytelling and readings of poetry in Uchinaaguchi. The poems provide moral lessons that give insight into Okinawan values. This presentation will provide people with the opportunity to hear live Uchinaaguchi and get a sense of what it sounds like and hopefully encourages people to learn learn and speak the language.
This talk will be held in Moore Hall 319 at 3pm on Tuesday, September 18, 2012.
