The Center for Okinawan Studies kicked off its lecture series on September 22, 2011, with a talk by Dr. Alfred Yama Kina. Dr. Kina received his PhD in folklore studies from Indiana University in 2006. His talk was titled, “Shuri, The Capital or (Why I love Shui Uēguni 首里親国).” He spoke about his observations and experiences he gained while living in Shuri in the early 1980s. Shuri was the old capital of Okinawa when it was known as the sovereign kingdom of Ryukyu. The lecture was well-attended with many from the community as well as our faculty and students.
