As of August 15, Monday, the 7th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival in Okinawa will be held as planned:
The Center for Okinawan Studies is able to offer partial travel support to select students who intend to participate in the Festival as part of their research/study of Okinawa (priority will be given to graduate students).
To be considered for support, please send the following two items to cos@hawaii.edu.
Application Letter (please explain your research/study topic on Okinawa)
A research/study plan (please outline your research/study activities during the Festival such as conducting interviews, archival research, etc.)
Application Deadline: September 9, Friday, 2022.
Please note that due to the rise of COVID in Japan:
There could be serious health risk to travel to Okinawa at this time
Obtaining a valid visa to enter Japan can be challenging for foreign nationals
Students are solely responsible for travel arrangements and risk management
Finally, students who receive support must report on their experience and findings from the travel at a COS workshop to be scheduled before the end of the fall semester (fall 2022).
Please write to cos@hawaii.edu for any further inquiry,
