Next COS Monthly Lecture: “Continuity and Change in Shuri-Style Kumiwudui”

January 27, 2015

Kumiwudui, the classical dance-drama of the Ryūkyū Kingdom, was first performed in 1719 for the king and his court after its creation by Tamagusuku Chōkun. After the kingdom ended in 1879, certain noble families passed down the court form, known as Shuri-Style Kumiwudui. Jimpu Kai has perpetuated this art form as taught by Master Ryōshō Kin, a National Living Treasure of Japan, in contemporary Hawai‘i. The lecture will discuss how tradition is sustained through change with a demonstration of an excerpt from Hanaui no En.
