Mission & Vision

Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) serves Native Hawaiians at the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa campus regardless of major, degree, or career choice.

The mission of Native Hawaiian Student Services (NHSS) is to serve Native Hawaiian students at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa through a comprehensive, culturally respectful, and academically competent program of student support and advising services. Our resources are designed to increase the recruitment, retention, and matriculation of Native Hawaiian students. NHSS has two primary kuleana (responsibility) with respect to student support. The first kuleana, as reflected in our mission, is to provide support and guidance to all Native Hawaiians pursuing higher education, with an emphasis on those attending UH Mānoa (approximately 3,000). The second kuleana is to provide support and guidance to all Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge (HSHK) majors, undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Hawaiian Language and/or Hawaiian Studies.

The current NHSS student learning outcomes shape our student support activities and stems from our overall mission. Our current student learning outcomes are:

(1)  Haumāna develop a sense of place and belonging at UH Mānoa.
(2)  Haumāna build networks of mentorship support with peers.
(3)  Haumāna develop a critical thinking epistemology using Hawaiian identity and history as the foundation.
(4)  Haumāna recognize their place within the lāhui.
(5)  Haumāna develop transferable academic and career skills.
(6)  Haumāna develop positive attitudes about their career or graduate school potential.
(7)  Lāhui Hawai‘i develop a sense of place and belonging at UH Mānoa.

NHSS was established:

  • To support and provide direction and guidance to Native Hawaiian students so that they graduate;

  • To reinforce and grow our sense of Hawaiian identity at the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa campus;
  • To include our “ʻohana” and community in higher education; and
  • To serve our lāhui.
