ʻAnoʻai me ke aloha!
After the UH Mānoa campus approved the current strategic plan Mānoa 2025: Our Kuleana to Hawai‘i and the World, the Native Hawaiian Place of Learning (NHPoL) Advancement Office began working on our strategy to support the plan’s three goals specific to becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning. One of the three goals is that, “100% of schools and colleges and other similar nonacademic units will have a five-year strategic plan to address each of the four Native Hawaiian place of learning strategic focus areas relevant to their particular units” (p. 19).

A short story on these cohorts:

In spring 2023, we reached out to the members of the Provost’s Council – including but not limited to academic deans, directors of ORUs, and the vice provost offices – to invite them and their units into a process with our NHPoL Advancement Office to support their efforts to create their five-year plans. They gauged readiness within their units and over the next three years have been supporting their units engagement. These cohorts are the continued response to this invitation and their efforts!

Process Guide
Below is a process for how UH Mānoa is working towards Native Hawaiian place of learning – a place where Hawaiʻi Papa o ke Ao: Hawaiʻi is the foundation of what we do every day. We thank the many people who have and continue to support, uplift, and implement the goals and recommendations made by our campus community.

In year 1, units at UH Mānoa engage in a 5-day professional development. This professional development is designed around the vision of our campus as articulated in the UH Mānoa strategic plan. Each unit joined a cohort based on calendar year, attending one professional development session within the calendar year. In this iterative process the cohorts are as follows:
- Cohort Kumukahi (2024)
- Cohort Kaulua (2025)
- Cohort Waikolu (2026)

In year 2, units will designate a hui or smaller group who will engage in monthly ongoing support sessions and work with the rest of their unit to create their draft five-year strategic action plans.
