UH Manoa Colleges of Arts & Sciences Present "Filipino Values, Transcending Borders"

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa‘s Colleges of Arts & Sciences present the latest event in the Universal Values for a Democratic Society — Nisei Veterans Endowed Forum Series, "Filipino Values, Transcending Borders." The presentation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiʻi‘s Mānoa Grand Ballroom.

Intended to help participants better understand and appreciate the impact of values in the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States, particularly in Hawaiʻi, the event includes featured guests:

· Rose Cruz Churma, architect and planner specializing in architectural programming and facilities planning; principal architect of DesignLab; and co-owner of a web-based bookstore that advocates for Filipino books in libraries and educational institutions across the country;

· Domingo Los BaƱos, retired educator; second generation, Kauai-born Filipino American; member of the First Filipino Infantry, U.S. Army during World War II; and inspiration for the award-winning documentary, An Untold Triumph;

· Ramon K. Sy, medical doctor and founder of Aloha Medical Mission, a non-profit organization serving the medical needs of underprivileged communities in Asia and the Pacific.

Dr. Dean Alegado, chair of the UH Mānoa Department of Ethnic Studies, will moderate the panel presentation. The event will also include musical performances by Timpuyog, the UH Mānoa Ilokano language program dance group, and Theo Gonzalves, assistant professor of American Studies at UH Mānoa.

The Universal Values for a Democratic Society — Nisei Veterans Endowed Forum Series was established by the Colleges of Arts and Sciences to foster thoughtful discussions on values and their role in enhancing a democratic society.

The forum is open to the public. Boxed lunch and beverage will be available for $7. Parking is available for $3 with validation at the JCCH parking garage.
