HONOLULU — In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the public is invited to join UH Mānoa‘s Hawaiʻi Commission for National and Community Service (HCNCS) and the university community in the 10th Annual Men‘s March Against Violence at noon, Thursday, Oct. 7, starting at the Kekaulike Plaza in Chinatown and ending at the Skygate on the grounds near Honolulu Hale.

Since the inaugural march in 1995, Hawaiʻi‘s children and women have continued to gather annually for the event to support men who marched, rallied and spoke out against domestic violence. The march acknowledges putting an end to domestic violence and involves everyone to become part of the solution.

"The Commission is pleased to have this unique opportunity to join with the rest of the University of Hawaiʻi community in promoting the critical role that men must have in bringing peace to homes in our state that have been disturbed by domestic violence," said Dennis M. Dunn, Vice Chair of the UH Mānoa Hawaiʻi Commission for National and Community Service and Director of Victim Witness Kokua Services. "We hope efforts such as the march will be remembered in the future as a catalyst in transforming men from ʻpart of the problem‘ to the ʻkey to the solution"‘ for violence in our homes and communities."

Following the march, there will be a rally featuring various individuals who will speak and bring awareness to the problem. The public can also visit Honolulu Hale anytime during the month of October and review chronicles of the march from the past 10 years.

Along with Dunn, Doris Ching, UH Vice President for Student Affairs and the university‘s administrative liaison to the Commission, is coordinating efforts to have university students, faculty and staff join in this year‘s march. HCNCS will assist with UH's participation and will provide free transportation from each Oʻahu campus to and from the event picking up at 11:15 a.m. and returning at 1 p.m.

For further information regarding transportation for UH participants, call HCNCS at 956-8145. For further information on the event, contact Joe Bloom at 565-0159.
