The APIL Gala 2016
The APIL Gala 2016

The Advocates for Public Interest Law (APIL) from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa's William S. Richardson School of Law will hold its 8th annual Gala and Silent Auction on Friday, March 9, 5:30–9 p.m. at Café Julia at the Laniākea YWCA, 1040 Richards Street. APIL has funded 145 grants that have enabled law students to help the underserved and vulnerable.

The fundraiser will feature live music, a silent auction and refreshments.

To be honored at the event are:

  • Intermediate Court of Appeals Chief Judge Craig Nakamura—Outstanding APIL Pick of the Year
  • Director of the Evening Part-Time Program Liam Skilling—Faculty Award
  • Lance Collins—Alumni Award
  • Sherry Broder—Corporate Sector Award
  • Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation—Non-Profile Sector Award

Tickets are $30 for law students, $35 for the general public and $40 at the door.

Dean Avi Soifer said APIL has provided more than 40,000 “billable hours” free to the community. “This is invaluable free legal assistance for some of those most in need in Hawaiʻi,” said Soifer. “We are proud of our students for doing all this, as well as putting together and running the fundraiser in the spirit of public service to others.”

The Advocates for Public Interest Law began in 1985 as a way for students at the UH Mānoa law school to put their legal training into practice.

APIL has since assisted more than 30 nonprofit community organizations that support Native Hawaiians, immigrants and the homeless, as well as victims of elder abuse, domestic violence and sex trafficking.
