The Dean of the UH Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene — Julie Johnson — has accepted an appointment as Dean at the College of Nursing at Kent State University in Ohio.

"Dean Johnson has made a difference for the university and for the State of Hawaiʻi during her time here," Chancellor Englert said. "She has been especially effective in building community and professional coalitions to support our program here, and I know that senior administrators at our major hospitals have been very impressed with her leadership.

"We will miss her professionalism and dedication," Englert added. "I know that our faculty and professional staff will maintain the momentum Dean Johnson initiated."

Dean Johnson has been at UH Manoa since August, 2003. She announced her plans to faculty and staff this afternoon; she will remain at UH Manoa until January. As part of her new responsibilities at Kent State, she has been asked to assist in the development of a college of health sciences.

"While I am sad to be leaving the University of Hawaiʻi," she said, "I know that when opportunity knocks, it‘s best to open the door and take a good look. I could not let this opportunity pass.

"I have appreciated the support of faculty, staff and students during my time here," she added. "They are a dedicated corps of talented professionals, and our wonderful students benefit from their skills and expertise. The School is in good hands as we prepare for new leadership."
