HONOLULU — The U.S. Department of Education awarded the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Education (COE) a $2 million grant for its Transition to Teaching (TTT) program to increase the number of qualified and licensed secondary math and science teachers in Hawaiʻi. The program is designed for mid-career professionals and recent college graduates who would like to make a transition in their careers to become qualified teachers in high-need schools.

"The need for qualified and fully licensed teachers, particularly in the secondary-level math and science areas, has increased, according to the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education," said Jocelyn Surla Banaria, COE program manager. "For the 2004—2005 school year, the DOE anticipates a need of approximately 100 secondary math and science teachers statewide."

The COE offers a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education (PBCSE), a fast-track three-semester program for individuals with a bachelor‘s degree outside of education. Through the TTT program, students can receive a $1,500 stipend per semester for up to three semesters (a total of $4,500).

Students who successfully pass the PRAXIS tests required for licensure can also be reimbursed for the amount of their test fees. In return, students must commit to teach for three years upon the program completion in a Hawaiʻi public school.

The PBCSE application deadline for the Spring 2005 term is September 1, 2004. For more information regarding the PBSCE and the TTT program, please contact Jocelyn Surla Banaria at 808- 956-6093.
