HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources was awarded a $48,300 grant from the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation‘s (HCF) Ingeborg V.F. McKee Fund to support studies on muscle-fat tissue interactions and obesity prevention.
Dr. Jinzeng Yang, principal investigator in the college‘s Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences, says there is concern for the increase in juvenile obesity in Hawaiʻi. Yang is working on molecular regulation of skeletal muscle growth and adipose tissue deposition. With the funding, Yang hopes to reveal critical molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle and tissue interactions to provide scientific insights on obesity prevention.
"The obesity epidemic is a worldwide phenomenon, affecting adults as well as children," said Yang. "I am pleased that HCF supports research in this area."
Established in 1916, the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation is a statewide, charitable services and grant making institution endowed with contributions from many donors. HCF also serves as a resource on philanthropy, and community issues and trends.
