Many of the most delicate questions in end-of-life care, among other elder law topics, will be explored during a half-day seminar at the UH Law School on Valentine’s Day. The Elder Law and Veterans Seminar, “Matters of the Heart,” is sponsored by the UH Elder Law Program at the William S. Richardson School of Law. It will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room at the Law School.

A reception and light lunch will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. While there is no admission charge, a $10 suggested donation at the door will cover the cost of lunch and materials. Law and Social Work students are welcome to attend at no charge, but reservations are required. Continuing education and ethics credits may be available to attorneys, social workers and health-care providers.

Participants are asked to register by Friday, February 10, by calling UHELP at (808) 956-6544 or emailing uhelp.edu@gmail.com

The opening discussion, “Try to Remember,” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will explore basic legal planning for older persons and Special Needs Trusts. The session will also look at how professionals can help plan for potential physical and mental incapacity of patients in order to avoid guardianship, conservatorship and abuse. Discussion participants will include attorney Kristin Bryant, UHELP Administrative Director Lenora Lee, and attorneys Christy Matsuba and Scott Suzuki.  Professor James Pietsch, Director of UHELP at the Law School, will moderate.

The second session, “Laws, Ethics, Medicine Autonomy—Deactivating Pacemakers,” from 1:30 to 3 p.m., will specifically look at health-care standards for the implantation and deactivation of Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices, including pacemakers, in end-of-life care. Discussion will focus on medical, legal and ethical guidelines to improve the autonomy and independence of patients under current medical and legal standards. Discussion participants will include cardiology patient Capt. Charles Sodersten, U.S. Navy (Ret.); cardiologist Dr. Robert Hong and psychiatrist Dr. Kara Lum.  Professor Pietsch will be on the panel and will also moderate.

The final afternoon session, “Legal Resources for Military Retirees and Their Caregivers,” from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., will explore legal resources for military retirees and their caregivers, and the laws and regulations that provide for military legal assistance for qualified clients. Discussion participants include attorney Richard Brawley, U.S. Coast Guard; Lt. Kristi Bao, U.S. Navy Judge Advocate; attorney Verndal Lee, U.S. Army; and Lt. Stephen Sciroco, U.S. Marine Corps Judge Advocate.  Moderator will be Lt. Col. Matthew McCall, U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate.
