“Renewing Our Sense of Wonder: Teaching Philosophy to Children”

Dr. Thomas Jackson to speak at Downtown Speakers Program on July 1st

HONOLULU — The Colleges of Arts & Sciences of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa continue their Downtown Speakers Program with a lecture on July 1, 2004 by Dr. Thomas Jackson, Director of Philosophy in the Schools Project and Associate Specialist of Philosophy. This free talk will be held from Noon to 1 p.m. at the American Savings Bank Tower, 1001 Bishop Street, 8th floor, Room 805. It is a brown-bag event so attendees are invited to bring their lunches.

Jackson will present an overview of what it means to teach philosophy to children, how to get "philosophical" with the children in ones life and how to nurture the philosopher within oneself.

Jackson received his PhD in Comparative Philosophy from the University of Hawaiʻi in 1979. Since 1984, he has been Director of the Philosophy in the Schools Project, bringing philosophical inquiry to schools in Hawaiʻi, Brazil, Australia, Singapore and China.
