The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM) College of Education offers qualified math and science teacher candidates the opportunity to earn up to $5,000 to finance their education through a program that qualifies them to be eligible for an initial teaching license.

Through the federally-funded Transition to Teaching (TTT) program, the college hopes to graduate a substantial number of science and mathematics teachers to serve in Hawaiʻi‘s public schools. The TTT program supports students with a $1,500 stipend per semester for three semesters (a total of $4,500) and reimburses students who successfully pass the PRAXIS test required for licensure. In return, students must commit to teach for three years in a Hawaiʻi public school. TTT is designed for mid-career professionals and recent college graduates who can become highly qualified teachers in high-need schools.

The college offers a fast-track 10-month program to individuals with a bachelor‘s degree outside of education, the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Secondary Education (PBCSE). The next application deadline for the PBCSE is September 1, 2004, for the Spring 2005 term.

The TTT program is a collaboration between the UHM College of Education, the Hawaiʻi Department of Education, and the UHM College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. If you are interested or have any questions about the TTT program, please contact Program Manager Jocelyn Surla Banaria at jbanaria@hawaii.edu or (808) 956-6093.
