Interested in marine conservation in Hawai‘i? Want to learn how to help the marine environment without getting your feet wet? And have fun learning? On Saturday, April 30, come celebrate marine conservation with the Hawai‘i Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program and learn something new about the marine environment and marine life of Hawai‘i.

The community event, titled May Day at Hanauma Bay 2016 - Celebrate Marine Conservation With Us, is offered free of charge for Hawai‘i residents and will take place on Saturday, April 30, from 10:00 a.m.  to 2:00 p.m.  Marine education specialists will be on site to offer interactive learning activities for all ages. The hands-on activities will include fish games, microplastic filtering activities, Hawaiian word matching, and craft activities for the keiki.

The spring event combines the spirit and inspiration of Earth Day and May Day, which are typically held in April and May, to recognize the importance of the marine environment of Hawai‘i and efforts to improve the health of our oceans.

Said Elizabeth Kumabe, program leader of the Hanauma Bay Education Program and organizer of the event, “We wanted to create an event that highlights themes of Earth Day and May Day to educate people about marine conservation in Hawai‘i, provide a sense of place, and focus on the broader effort to improve our ocean.”

All events will offer crafts and activities for the keiki in the Hanauma Bay Education Center.

There is a $1 parking fee for all vehicles.  Admission to the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is free for Hawai‘i residents with valid photo ID.  Admission cost is $7.50 for non-Hawai‘i residents.
