University of Hawai‘i–West O‘ahu Bookstore proudly released its second, student-designed West is Best T-shirt to the public.

The winning design, with 1,919 votes from an online public poll, came from UH West O‘ahu senior and Roosevelt High School graduate Melissa Lum. Lum received a grand prize of an $100 UH Bookstores gift card and a West is Best T-shirt with her design.

“My thoughts were to create a design that is clean and modern and that everyone can read,” she said.

Lum applied typography skills learned in her UH West O’ahu creative media coursework to present West is Best in a bold, sans serif font below the UH West O‘ahu seal.

The 2015 campus shirt contest was open to student designs only. UH West O’ahu Bookstore manager Kory Uramoto-Wong plans to repeat the contest for a third time in fall 2016.

“I’m going to start a collection of these shirts, with winners’ autographs,” Uramoto-Wong said. “I’m creating a wall of fame in our store.”

West is Best T-shirts may be purchased at the West O‘ahu Bookstore, located on the second floor of UHWO Campus Center, and online at www.bookstore.hawaii.edu/westoahu.

UH students receive a discount on their first West is Best shirt purchased with valid student ID. All proceeds support the University of Hawai‘i in its educational mission.
