University of Hawai‘i contributes to Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage

HONOLULU – Dozens of stakeholders from across the University of Hawai‘i System gathered at College Hill in Mānoa this afternoon to discuss UHʻs contribution to and vision for the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage and next steps forward.

Polynesian Voyaging Society President Nainoa Thompson shared an update on the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage.  UH President David Lassner said, “This is a day for all of us to learn from each other and then chart the path forward for our university, for Hawai‘i’s university, and sail to a better future.”

Small group discussions on how to achieve the “Promise to the Children” and how to mālama honua were led by UH stakeholders from across the state including:

  • Student Support and Academic Programs (Haunani Kane, UH Mānoa, and Auli‘i Silva, Leeward Community College)
  • Research Inquiry (Ruth Gates, UH Mānoa,  and Ka‘iu Kimura, UH Hilo)
  • Institutional Change (Hokulani Aikau, UH Mānoa, and Pualani Lincoln, Hawai‘i Community College)
  • Campus/Community Partnerships (Dennis Chun, Kaua‘i Community College and Leimomi Dirks, Windward Community College/UH Mānoa)

Pwō navigator Kālepa Baybayan, Navigator in Residence at UH Hilo’s ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center, and Lassner led a closing discussion about next steps and commitments.  Once the three-hour formal meeting was completed, participants were also able to talk story informally.
