The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) – Aloha Chapter honored Jay H. Shidler with the 2015 Outstanding Philanthropist award at its annual luncheon at Sheraton Waikiki on November 17.

Shidler, founder and managing partner of The Shidler Group and UH Mānoa business college namesake, was recognized for his commitment to UH Mānoa's Shidler College of Business and for his philanthropic leadership in Hawai‘i. In 2014, Shidler increased his total donation to the college to $100 million, making it the largest donation ever made to the University of Hawai‘i from a private donor.

Shidler was also named among the top 50 American philanthropists in 2014 by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, and was included on AACSB International’s 100 Influential Leaders list in 2015. AACSB is the premier business accreditation institution in the world.

Shidler also supports a number of other educational, cultural and charitable organizations including The Shidler Family Foundation, Alexis de Tocqueville Society of the United Way, Nature Conservancy, Honolulu Museum of Art, American Heart Association and Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Nakata Named AFP Outstanding Professional Fundraiser

AFP-Aloha Chapter also recognized Unyong Nakata, UH Foundation’s senior director of development for the Shidler College of Business. She was awarded the Outstanding Professional Fundraiser for her accomplishments and leadership in the field of philanthropy, and her tireless dedication to help bring the Shidler gift to fruition. Nakata has been one of UH Foundation’s top fundraisers bringing in new scholarship, faculty endowments and developing fundraising initiatives.

Nakata received her BS and MBA from UH Mānoa.
