University of Hawaii at Manoa Professor of Bioengineering Appointed to Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources

University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources Professor of Bioengineering and Aquaculture Jaw-Kai Wang has been appointed to a three-year term on the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources (BANR).

Wang is a registered professional engineer in the State of Hawaiʻi and has made significant contributions to the design of integrated marine aquacultural production systems and to the basic science in aquaculture effluent management. He is the founder and the first president of the Aquacultural Engineering Society (1993-95) and is the founder and President of Aquaculture Technology Incorporated (established 1990), a company devoted to the development of biotechnology for marine aquaculture production and large-scale marine micro-algae production and the extraction of antibiotics from marine micro-algae.

BANR of the National Academies, operating under a congressional charter designating the National Academy of Sciences as an independent adviser to the nation, provides expert scientific advice on global problems and issues facing agriculture, food, and environmental systems.

BANR is responsible for providing independent, objective science-based advice on all aspects of the production, protection, processing, and marketing of plants (food, feed, and forest products) and animals (food, companion, service, research, education, and wild animals); management and conservation of range, soil, water, and genetic resources; and application of technologic advances—electronic and biologic—that will shape the future of agriculture m the United States.
