The Rainbow Shuttle, a transportation service for UH Mānoa students, staff and visitors commuting within three miles of campus, recently expanded its routes to include the neighborhood of Makiki.

The new route that opened August 24 makes multiple stops between Varney Circle and Wilder Avenue, including Punahou School, Makiki Park and the Makiki Shopping Village. The Makiki Shuttle has attracted more than 300 riders within its first week, and is the eighth daytime route for the Rainbow Shuttle System.

“We’re happy to provide this expanded service for our UHM commuters, and to promote more sustainable modes of transportation for Honolulu,” said Cathleen Matsushima, operations manager for UH Mānoa Commuter and Fleet Services.

Each Rainbow Shuttle seats 28 passengers at a time and offers air-conditioning, ADA access and bike racks for commuters. Shuttles circle campus every half-hour during Fall and Spring academic terms, and select routes are in service during evening hours and Summer sessions.

Rainbow Shuttles provide transportation to and from the neighborhoods of Mānoa, Kaimuki and Mo’ili’ili, as well as University Housing and academic buildings. Routes may be tracked in real-time with the UHM Shuttle App, available for download on Apple and Android devices and at www.UHMShuttle.com.

A Spring 2015 ridership survey showed that the Rainbow Shuttle System picks up approximately 175,000 passengers per semester.
