The University of Hawaiʻi Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Fourth Annual North Texas Jazz Festival held from April 2-4 in Addison, Texas. The Festival is sponsored by the University of North Texas (UNT) Jazz Studies Program.

The University of Hawaiʻi Jazz Ensemble, directed by Patrick Hennessey, is one of only seven universities chosen from across the nation to compete in the big band category. Students will be exposed to, and compete with, some of the nation‘s finest jazz programs while receiving instruction and recognition from many of today‘s outstanding jazz educators and performers. The Festival will be a rare opportunity for the Jazz Ensemble students to gain experience performing for a panel of all-star judges and elite jazz students from around the country.

Each year, the Festival spotlights emerging talent among the participating bands performing at the Festival. A panel made up of professional jazz musicians and music educators evaluate group and individual performances. The outstanding student big bands, combos and vocal groups in the high school/middle school and university/community college categories are invited to perform as part of the professional evening concert lineup.

The University of Hawaiʻi Jazz Ensemble program is comprised of two to three ensembles numbering approximately 20 members each. These groups provide students, music majors and non-music majors alike, with an opportunity to hone their ensemble, sight-reading and improvisational skills. Previous performances include the University of Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival (2002) and the Reno Jazz Festival (2003).
