The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced today that the UH Manoa Athletic Department has been fully certified — indicating that UH is "in substantial conformity with operating principles" of the governing organization.

The certification program examines an institution‘s governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and equity, welfare and sportsmanship. Certification in good standing is for a ten-year period; all 325 active Division I members participate in the process.

The Manoa program was fully certified in 1997 in the NCAA‘s initial round of campus reviews for Division I programs, and hosted a visiting team of peer-review team members for a second-cycle review in late January, 2003. In preparation for the visit, a steering committee conducted a year-long broadly based campus and community consultation process to prepare a UH Manoa Self-Study Report.

Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert commented, "The campus steering committee worked very hard for to produce a very detailed document for the review team that clearly identifies a department committed to playing by the rules and working in the best interests of our student athletes. Athletic director Herman Frazier‘s management team is now in place, and they have a very solid foundation on which to build further successes."

"I am extremely happy for the university and all of the individuals who worked on this project," Frazier added. "This certification process had already started when Chancellor Englert and I arrived on campus. We were very fortunate to only have to tie up a few loose ends. I would also like to congratulate and salute the steering committee."

"This certification by the NCAA is a validation of the hard work and commitment of not only the campus steering committee but the entire UH Mānoa Athletics department, including staff, coaches and student athletes," said UH President Evan S. Dobelle. "I am certain that under the leadership of Herman Frazier, the department will see continued success and remarkable advancements in establishing UH Mānoa as a premier athletics program. We do more with less than any other NCAA Division I program."
