The University of Hawaiʻi Foundation announces three development professionals have joined the team, and a promotion.

Gary Cordova has joined the team as executive director of development at UH Mānoa. He will work with William S. Richardson School of Law Dean Soifer on priorities to expand fundraising efforts and broaden philanthropic support for the Law School. Most recently, Cordova was the senior director of regional development with the University of Oregon, strategically directing all principal major gift fundraising for the University of Oregon for Southern California, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Texas.  During an earlier tenure at the University of Oregon, he was the assistant dean of external affairs and development for the Charles H. Lundquist College of Business.  Cordova was vice president for institutional advancement at Chaminade University of Honolulu from 2002-07.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Journalism from the University of Northern Colorado, and a Master of Arts in English from Stanford University in California.

Tim Szymanowski has joined the team as executive director of development at UH Mānoa. He will work with the deans and directors of the College of Natural Sciences, Lyon Arboretum, SOEST and IFA to expand fundraising efforts and broaden philanthropic support for each of these science-related areas. Most recently, Szymanowski served in a leadership role with Eastern Washington University, overseeing development efforts for all colleges, athletics, libraries, foundations and corporations. He also served as the director of planned giving at Eastern Washington University.  He brings experience from the private sector, where he worked as the director of sales and marketing at Hewes Marine Company, and was the vice president and general manager at Priority Electronics USA.  Szymanowski earned a Master of Divinity at Western Seminary in Portland, and a Bachelor of Arts at Northwest Nazarene University in Idaho.

Matt Henry has joined the team as the director of development for the College of Social Sciences. In this role, he will be working closely with Dean Denise Konan to build philanthropic support for the College. He most recently served as director of development for the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.  Prior to that, he was a director of development in the University of California system for twelve years on the Santa Cruz and San Diego campuses. In this role, he engaged University of California alumni in Hawai‘i. Henry has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Richmond (VA) in Psychology and Leadership Studies and a Master of Not-for-Profit Leadership from Seattle University.

The Foundation is also happy to announce that Michael Coppes has been promoted to director of estate and gift planning. He previously served as the associate director for the UH Foundation office of estate and gift planning. In this new role, he has assumed the responsibility of managing the day-to-day operations of the estate and gift planning office in addition to working with donors to create impactful philanthropic legacies through charitable tax strategies and their estate plans.

Coppes is a licensed attorney with 30 years of private practice experience focused on wills, trusts, estate administration, general probate law, and advising non-profits on charitable gift planning. Prior to joining the UH Foundation in 2008, he was a shareholder member of Emswiller, Williams, Noland and Clarke, P.C., an Indianapolis, Indiana law firm. He is a member of the Hawai'i Estate Planning Council, Financial Planners Association of Hawaii, Partnership for Philanthropic Planning of Hawaii, and the Exchange Club of Downtown Honolulu.
