Honolulu's Phi Theta Kappa chapter wins big at regional convention

Six regional awards honor student work and achievement; faculty advisor Lena Low also recognized

Honolulu Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter was bestowed six awards at the annual Pacific Regional Convention of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society held in early March.
 
Honolulu’s chapter, also known as Alpha Kappa Iota, was recognized with the following regional awards:
  • Five Star Chapter Award (the highest level of chapter development)
  • Regional Coordinator's Distinguished Chapter Award (in recognition of the chapter's contributions to the Pacific Region)
  • Distinguished Honors in Action Project Award (Project Title: APEC - Around the Pacific in Eighty Clicks; Project Writers: Jenalyn Camagong, Mike Handy, Kyle Colwell, Mark Lombawa, Zhiqing Yao, Li Mei Chen)
  • Distinguished Issue Award (Issue 1: Definition - What does the phrase "democratization of information" mean? Project Writers: Jenalyn Camagong, Mike Handy, Kyle Colwell, Mark Lombawa, Zhiqing Yao, Li Mei Chen)
  • Distinguished Chapter Officer Award: Jenalyn Camagong (Nomination Writers: Mark Lombawa, Lena Low, Chris Ann Moore)
  • Distinguished Advisor Award: Lena Low (Nomination Writers: Mark Lombawa, Billie Takaki Lueder)
Faculty advisor Lena Low was also recognized with the Regional Coordinator's Horizon Award, which is presented in recognition of the advisor's contributions to the chapter and the Pacific Region.
 
These regional awards recognize Phi Theta Kappa students for their hard work and scholarly research efforts in developing and implementing scholarship, service and leadership projects that embodied last year's honors topic, "The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise."
 
The college's convention delegates included students Mark Lombawa, Jenalyn Camagong, Li Mei Chen, Kainoa Sanford, Kyle Colwell, Ted Ikari, Sarah Kuramoto, Wilfred Pascua, Clayton Ababa, and advisors Rob Edmondson and Lena Low.
 
Phi Theta Kappa is recognized as the official honor society for community colleges by the American Association of Community Colleges. The society recognizes and encourages the academic achievement of two-year college students and provides opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.
