The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education (COE) was ranked one of the top 100 online education programs by U.S. News & World Report, 2012 edition. It is the first time the COE participated in this category, but the college has consistently ranked in the top 100 for teacher preparation schools in the nation and recently received its highest placement (35 out of 279 surveyed).

Some of the COE’s exciting programs include a Second Life (SL) Island where faculty, students, alumni, and staff meet and collaborate in a virtual world. In May 2011, SL held its first in-world graduation ceremony for its online master’s program graduates, which received national attention. The college continues to increase its online teaching to meet professional development needs for in-service teachers in the state of Hawai‘i.

"The college is committed to expanding our online and distance options as a way to better serve the needs of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific region,” said Dean Chris Sorensen. “Distance education provides access to opportunities to those who are not able to come to campus for a variety of reasons, including geographic location as well as life commitments."

Rankings were based on numerical indicator rankings for online master’s of education degree programs, including admissions selectivity, faculty credentials and training, student engagement and accreditation, and student services and technology.
