The University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center announced it has expanded its faculty with the additions of Peiwen Fei, MD, PhD, associate professor, and James Turkson, PhD, professor, to the Cancer Biology Program.

Dr. Fei was most recently an associate professor with the Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota. Fei’s research interests focus on the function of tumor suppressors and what can be learned from cancer susceptibility syndromes. She received her medical degree from Xu Zhou Medical College in China and her doctoral degree in pathology and cell biology from Thomas Jefferson University in Pennsylvania. She held fellowships with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Pennsylvania and the National Institute on Aging at the National Institute of Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Turkson was most recently an associate professor in the department of molecular biology and microbiology at the University of Central Florida’s Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences. Turkson’s research focuses on developing novel anticancer drugs based on targeting signal transduction and apoptosis pathways. He earned his doctoral degree in pharmacology from the University of Alberta, Edmonton in Canada.

The UH Cancer Center is actively recruiting world-class scientists to enhance its position as one of the leading cancer research centers in the nation. Through collaborations with the local clinical community, these individuals help advance the level of cancer care offered in the state. They also bring federal grant funding to Hawaiʻi that supports the conduct of cutting-edge research and growth of the state’s developing biotech industry.
