In celebration of international Open Access Week, the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Library is hosting special events throughout the week of October 24.
 
Monday, October 24, 3-6 p.m.
Screening and discussion of RiP: A Remix Manifesto
Hamilton Library Room 306
Activist filmmaker Brett Gaylor investigates copyright and how it has been distorted into a set of laws that restrict creativity, inhibit discovery and turn regular people into criminals. The film features groundbreaking mash-up artist Girl Talk, Laurence Lessig, Cory Doctorow, and Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil. Refreshments will be provided, as well as a discussion after the film.

Creative Commons Animated Shorts Film Festival
Sinclair Library Heritage Reading Room
Sometimes you can get something for nothing; come see what can be done with open source software and remixed copyright rules. Three animated short films created with free 3D animation software that are free to share under a Creative Commons attribution license will be shown. The films screened will include: Elephants Dream (2006), Big Buck Bunny (2008) and Sintel (2010).

Jean Claude Bradley Lecture

Jean-Claude Bradley is an Associate Professor of Chemistry and E-Learning Coordinator for the College of Arts and Sciences at Drexel University. In 2005, he began the UsefulChem project which introduced what he calls, Open Notebook Science. This concept adds transparency to science by publishing research in real time on online, freely accessible blogs, wikis and web pages. Hear from Bradley and learn more about his pioneering work at a virtual lecture.

From music to literature and even academics, everything is a remix. Stop by the poster session to learn more about who is remixing what or even share what you’re remixing!
 
Drop by the Open Access Resource table throughout the week to learn more about what Open Access is, how it affects you and how you can get involved. On Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Thursday, Oct. 27, visit the table in front of Sinclair Library from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.  On Wednesday, Oct. 26, visit the table in front of Hamilton Library from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.. Be sure to ask how to be entered for a prize!
