Joanne Cooper honored with UH Mānoa Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award

HONOLULU — Joanne Cooper, a professor in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Education, has been presented the 2011 Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award by Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw. Established by the UH Mānoa Graduate Division in 2005, the award allows graduate students to nominate faculty for excellent mentoring, one of the foundations of outstanding graduate education.

 

Cooper has been a member of the graduate faculty at UH Mānoa since 1992. As a professor in the Department of Educational Administration, she has mentored more than 70 graduate students to the successful completion of their advanced degrees. Her former graduate students include two high-level administrators at Mānoa and faculty at all levels of education employed throughout Hawai‘i and the mainland.

 

Her students describe her as an inspirational guiding light and a friend who rigorously maintains standards while providing encouragement and support. Cooper is an excellent role model and demonstrates daily her dedication to research, while also pushing her students to think critically, question their own worldviews and seek out new perspectives and understanding.

 

She earned her PhD in educational policy and management from the University of Oregon.

 

Cooper will be recognized for her achievements along with other UH award recipients at the annual Convocation ceremony to be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at Kennedy Theatre on the Mānoa campus. The ceremony is open to the public at no charge; no reservations are needed.
