University of Hawaiʻi–West O‘ahu’s Dr. Elaine Lee recently judged the “Best Use of Statistics” award in the Hawai‘i State Science and Engineering Fair held at the Hawai‘i Convention Center in March. The annual fair, held since 1957, provides an opportunity for Hawai‘i’s best and brightest students to demonstrate their scientific knowledge.

A $100 prize was awarded to Paul Hurst of Kahuku High and Intermediate School for his project “Salinity and Electrolytic Cells” for his use and application of statistics. Lee judged the event as a representative of the Hawai‘i chapter of the American Statistical Association (ASA) along with UH Manoa’s Dr. Russell Yost, professor of soil science and ASA Hawai‘i chapter vice president.

As the director of institutional research at UH West O‘ahu, Lee manages the university’s Institutional Research Office and conducts quantitative and qualitative institutional research by planning, directing, and organizing projects for comprehensive study in the areas of academic affairs, graduation, and retention. She also serves as the UH West O‘ahu accreditation liaison officer and the campus eCAFE administrator. She is a member of the campus Accreditation Steering Committee and the Western Association of Schools & Colleges Benchmark Working Group. Lee is also the vice president of the institutional research group, Pacific Association for Institutional Research.

The American Statistical Association is the world’s largest community of statisticians. The ASA supports excellence in the development, application, and dissemination of statistical science through meetings, publications, membership services, education, accreditation, and advocacy.
