UH West O‘ahu SIFE team celebrates after winning the regional competition in March.
A team of students from University of Hawai‘i–West Oʻahu will represent the university at the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) national event after winning the regional competition held on March 16 on Oʻahu. The UH West O‘ahu team, comprised of business and finance students, competed against other area colleges before being selected as the 2011 USA SIFE Hawai‘i Regional Champions, and will now head to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete at the national competition on May 10-12.
The UH West O‘ahu team’s projects focused on introducing economics concepts to elementary school students through a mock auction and creating a presentation on environmental sustainability and recycling, conducting a seminar on financial literacy for residents of the Onemalu Homeless Shelter, and presenting a workshop on business ethnics for local high school students.
"I was pleasantly surprised by our UH West Oʻahu SIFE team again this year,” said Dr. Eun Ahn, associate professor of economics and finance at UH West O‘ahu and UH West Oʻahu SIFE team faculty advisor. “The students worked very hard to integrate what they have learned in the classroom to better their community. I believe our projects and presentation skills are only getting stronger with experience.”
The following UH West O‘ahu students comprised the team that competed against Chaminade University, BYU-Hawai‘i, Leeward Community College and Hawai‘i Pacific University:
  • Angelina Castro
  • Joshua Fowler
  • Valerie Oyakawa Hill
  • Romano Imamura
  • Katie Laethem
  • Chantelle Lee
  • Phletcher Pennington
  • Aaron Yap
Students in Free Enterprise is a worldwide organization that brings together a diverse network of university students, academic professionals and industry leaders around the shared mission of creating a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business. SIFE teams contribute their talents to various projects that improve the lives of people worldwide. SIFE participants demonstrate that individuals with a knowledge and passion for business can be a powerful force for change.
The SIFE team at UH West O‘ahu has been dormant until Ahn re-introduced the SIFE program using UH West O‘ahu’s FIN 496 class, an entrepreneurial service learning course where teams complete community service projects that fall under various business concepts of financial literacy, success skills, market economics and more. Ahn and Dr. Frank Kudo are faculty advisors for the UH West O‘ahu SIFE team.
