PEARL CITY – Senior leadership of the University of Hawai‘i System and Tokai University Educational System signed a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) on January 15 paving the way for the permanent relocation of Hawai‘i Tokai International College (HTIC) to Kapolei, within steps of the new UH West O‘ahu campus.

The agreement formalizes the understanding between one of Japan’s largest private university systems and the University of Hawai‘i, allowing students from Japan and Hawai‘i to live in the same dormitories while taking greatest advantage of synergies between the two campuses, such as shared programs and other facilities.

“Our agreement with Tokai University Educational System is a benefit to our State and certainly to the UH System,” said UH President M.R.C. Greenwood, who signed the MOU at the ceremony. “By placing one of Japan’s outstanding institutions of higher education alongside our newest and most modern university campus, together we will offer opportunities to enhance education that benefit both campuses.”

The new HTIC campus is set to open shortly after UH West O‘ahu’s fall 2012 opening. Students at HTIC will have an opportunity to finish their first two years at HTIC and later attain a bachelor’s degree at UH West O‘ahu.

“I am very glad that HTIC will be moving next to the new UH West O‘ahu campus,” said Naoto Yoshikawa, HTIC chancellor. “I believe that our institution, with an international student body from Japan, Hawai‘i, the U.S. mainland, and other countries, will enhance the global atmosphere of the UH West O‘ahu campus to the mutual benefit of students at both HTIC and UH West O‘ahu.”

UH West O‘ahu’s program sharing and location next to the new HTIC campus are major benefits to Hawai‘i’s students, according to UH West O‘ahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni. “Our new campus features programs that are both relevant and highly regarded by our students and graduates. What makes our relationship with HTIC so special are cultural experiences and education that students from both campuses will share and take with them around the world.”

Established in 1992 as an American two-year liberal arts college, HTIC is located in Honolulu. HTIC, which is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), is the only American campus of the Tokai University Educational System of Japan (TES).

UH West O‘ahu became a four-year, comprehensive university when it served its first class of freshmen in fall 2007. The University offers quality education, small classes and personalized attention at convenient locations. UH West O‘ahu has begun construction of a state-of-the art, new campus in the City of Kapolei.
