New leader for Graduate Division named

Patricia Cooper, currently Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at UH Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), will join the staff of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education as Interim Dean of the Graduate Division. 
 
Her position as dean will be effective October 1, 2010, when current Dean Peter Garrod assumes the responsibilities of Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Relations.
 
Cooper has served as Associate Dean at SOEST for the past 12 years, and is an UH Mānoa alumna and former faculty member in the Department of Geology and Geophysics. She previously served as Special Assistant to the UH Senior Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate Division, and Interim Assistant Dean of the UH Mānoa Graduate Division. 
 
“I appreciate the opportunity to serve the UH Mānoa community in this new role and look forward to working with administrators, faculty, staff and students to advance graduate education in Hawai‘i,” said Cooper, a Waikīkī resident.
 
Added Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education Gary K. Ostrander, "With over 5,500 graduate students enrolled in more than 100 graduate programs, we continue to place a high priority on training the next generation of leaders in very diverse disciplines.”
 
Garrod received his BS from UC Davis and MS and PhD from UC Berkeley, all in agricultural economics.  He joined the UH Mānoa Agricultural and Resource Economics faculty in 1972. 
 
His research interests include transportation, market structure, and agricultural statistics, particularly in the context of agricultural development.  Before joining the Graduate Division in 1987, he worked extensively on agricultural issues in Hawai‘i and internationally, including assignments in South America, the South Pacific, Asia and Portugal. Garrod is a resident of Kaimuki.
