HONOLULU – At its monthly meeting held this week at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, the UH Board of Regents approved the reappointments of Herring Kalua and Christian Veillet to the Mauna Kea Management Board. Each reappointment is for a second four-year term, effective July 1, 2010, through December 31, 2014.

Kalua has worked for over 39 years for the state Department of Transportation and currently serves as supervisor for construction and highway maintenance on the island of Hawai‘i. Born and raised on the Big Island, Kalua has been actively involved in numerous community organizations and activities including the Governor’s Advisory Board on Veterans’ Services, East Hawai‘i Kamehameha School’s Advisory Committee, Hawaiian Home Lands Commission and the Keaukaha Panaewa Association. He also served on the Mauna Kea Advisory Committee from 1998-2000 that helped develop the Master Plan itself.

Veillet has been associated with the Canada France Hawai‘i Telescope (CFHT) for the past 14 years. He first arrived at CFHT in 1996 where he served as a resident astronomer for three years followed by an appointment to senior resident astronomer. In 2003, he was appointed executive director and continues to serve in this capacity. Veillet is highly regarded in the local astronomy community for his commitment to ensuring that development and operations of astronomical facilities on Mauna Kea are carried out with sensitivity, care and respect to the special nature of Mauna Kea.

The Mauna Kea Management Board is comprised of seven members representing various constituencies with a stake in Mauna Kea – Native Hawaiians, environment, education, commercial activities, astronomy, Department of Land and Natural Resources and the general community. The board’s primary role is to advise the chancellor at UH Hilo on management of the Mauna Kea Science Reserve, and it serves as the main community voice for activities and development planned for the science reserve.
