HONOLULU — The University of Hawaiʻi Office of Capital Improvements (OCI), plans to award $230 million in repair and maintenance and new construction projects over the next year. The projects include a range of repair and renovations systemwide including electrical and equipment upgrades, re-roofing repairs, and other facility improvements, as well as five new major construction projects to support campus operations and benefit students.

"The university has been stepping up our repair and maintenance efforts to chip away at our deferred maintenance list," said Brian Minaai, associate vice president for capital improvements. "We also plan to begin five new major construction projects for several community colleges as well as UH Mānoa and UH Hilo. We believe these projects will contribute in a positive way to the economy and continue to improve the way we can serve our students."

All of the funding for these projects have been funded by the Legislature and allotted by the governor.

Included in the five major construction projects are a student services building for the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, a science building for Maui Community College, a Library Learning Resource Center for Windward Community College, and the renovation and expansion of Campus Center and construction of an Information Technology Center at UH Mānoa.

The UH Hilo student services building addition and Maui CC Science building are estimated to begin work by January 2010. The remaining projects in the design phase with estimated bid dates also beginning in the spring of 2010.

Capital Improvement Projects are managed by OCI, which oversees new developments and major renovations of existing buildings, while the repair and maintenance projects are managed by the professional staff of the three facilities offices at UH Mānoa, UH Hilo and the Community Colleges System.
