The William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa proudly announces the appointment of Professor Jon M. Van Dyke as the inaugural Carlsmith Ball Faculty Scholar. The position was made possible through the generosity of a $150,000 gift from Carlsmith Ball LLP to support research and scholarship by Law School faculty members.

Professor Van Dyke received his BA cum laude from Yale College and his JD cum laude from Harvard Law School. He is renowned for his prolific scholarship, teaching, and lecturing throughout the U.S. and abroad in the areas of Constitutional Law, International Law, International Human Rights, and International Ocean Law.

He has been teaching in Hawai‘i at the Law School since 1976, and previously taught at Hastings College of Law and the Catholic University Law School in Washington, D.C. He served as law clerk for Chief Justice Roger Traynor of the California Supreme Court and was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Democratic Institutions in Santa Barbara, Calif. He has been the recipient of the University of Hawaiʻi Presidential Citation for Excellence in Teaching and was named the Law School‘s Outstanding Professor four times.

"Carlsmith is a benefactor of UH‘s distinguished Law School program by employing graduates who come to our firm with the values, skills, and knowledge to serve clients and the Asia-Pacific community with honor. Our gift was inspired by the UH William S. Richardson School of Law‘s tremendous contribution to Hawai‘i and the Asia-Pacific legal community," said Karl Kobayashi, Chair, Carlsmith Ball LLP.

Added Dean Avi Soifer, "Professor Van Dyke is a treasure and an obvious choice as the first Carlsmith Ball faculty scholar. In addition to his great teaching and work as a lawyer, he has an extraordinary record of scholarship recognized nationally and internationally. The Law School is tremendously grateful to Carlsmith Ball for its leadership and for this ongoing investment in Hawaii‘s Law School."
